Finding an aircon tech shouldn’t be harder than the heatwave

You know the drill. The first proper hot week hits, the bedroom unit gives up, and you start ringing. Voicemail. A bloke who says he’ll get back to you and never does. Someone who books a quote visit, so you take the morning off, and then doesn’t show. When three quotes finally turn up, none of them line up: different brands, different sizes, different ideas of what a ‘standard install’ is. And you still don’t know which of them is actually licensed.

Meanwhile the house is an oven, you’re losing days, and it’s tempting to grab whoever answers first. That’s how people end up with an undersized unit, a dodgy pipe run or a job that has to be done twice.

Breathe out. That’s the bit we’ve already done. We hand-pick local aircon installers, check their licences and insurance, look at their track record, and only keep the ones who quote upfront in writing and call back. You fill in one form, about 30 seconds, and one installer who suits your job gets in touch. That’s it. That’s the whole process.

Brick lowset in Aspley, two-storey in North Lakes, older Queenslander in Nundah or a unit near Chermside, we choose who’s right for the job. They quote you directly, do the work under their own licences, and you decide whether to go ahead. Free for you, no obligation.

How it works

How it works

01

Tell us the job

Pop in your suburb, what you need (new install, service or repair) and the rooms involved. Photos of the walls and switchboard help. It takes about 30 seconds.

02

We pick the right installer

We match your job to one vetted local installer based on the type of work, your suburb and who’s available.

03

They call you

Your installer gets in touch, books a look if needed and gives you a written quote. No obligation. If it suits, you book directly with them.

Who’s actually licensed? We’ve already checked.

Most people have no idea what licences an aircon installer needs, and fair enough. Ring around and you’ll get five different answers, plus someone’s cousin who ‘can do it cheap’. Get it wrong and you risk an unsafe electrical connection or a warranty claim that goes nowhere.

Here’s the short version. The refrigerant side (connecting the pipework, pressure testing, vacuuming and charging) needs a refrigerant handling licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council, known as ARCtick. The electrical side (a circuit from your switchboard and an isolator at the outdoor unit) needs a Queensland electrical licence. Some installers hold both; others team up with a licensed electrician. Either is fine, as long as both parts are done by licensed people. Bigger building-type jobs can also need QBCC licensing.

Sorted. We check every installer’s licences and insurance before they join, so you’re not chasing licence numbers on a hot afternoon. You’re still welcome to ask for them, and a good installer will happily show you.

Choosing the right system for a northside home

Split systems suit most homes where you want to cool one to three rooms. They’re the most affordable way to get started, each room runs independently, and a bedroom unit in a typical brick home is usually a straightforward job. Expect a 2.5 kW unit for a small bedroom, 3.5 kW for a main bedroom and 5 to 8 kW for living areas, depending on ceiling height, insulation and how much western sun the room gets.

Ducted systems make sense when you want most of the house cooled, have enough roof space for the indoor unit and ductwork, and prefer vents over wall units. Zoning lets you shut off rooms you aren’t using, which keeps running costs down. Many two-storey homes in newer estates suit ducted well; older Queenslanders with low-pitched or no roof space can be harder.

Multi-head systems run several indoor units off one outdoor unit. They help in townhouses and units where there is only room for one condenser, but they cost more than two separate splits and if the outdoor unit fails, every room goes warm at once.

Reverse cycle is the norm in Brisbane. You will mostly use cooling and the dry mode for humid days, but it is also one of the cheaper ways to take the chill off winter mornings.

Common questions

Common questions

Are you an air conditioning installer?

No, and that’s the point. We do the finding, checking and choosing; the installer does the aircon. We pick one licensed local installer who suits your job, and they quote, contract and do the work directly with you, including the workmanship warranty. You get a trusted tradie without the ring-around.

How do you choose the tradie?

We look at three things: the type of job, your suburb and who’s available. A ducted retrofit, a bedroom split, a repair or a commercial job goes to an installer who does that kind of work day in, day out. Every installer on our list has had their licences and insurance checked and their track record looked at, and has agreed to quote upfront in writing and call you back fast.

Does it cost anything to use the service?

No, it’s free for you. You only pay the installer, and only if you accept their quote and book the work. There’s no sign-up, no membership and no obligation. If the quote doesn’t suit, just say no thanks. If the installer isn’t the right fit for you, tell us and we’ll line up another.

What licences should an aircon installer hold in Queensland?

The refrigerant work needs a refrigerant handling licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council, known as ARCtick. Connecting the system to your power needs an appropriate Queensland electrical licence. Some larger jobs may also need QBCC licensing. We check every installer’s licences before they join, and you’re welcome to ask to see them.

How much does a split system cost to install in North Brisbane?

As a rough guide, a 2.5 to 3.5 kW bedroom split system supplied and installed back-to-back typically lands between about $1,200 and $2,800. Larger 7 to 9 kW living-room units run from about $2,200 to $5,500. Long pipe runs, two-storey access and switchboard upgrades add to that. Get a written quote for your home.

How quickly can someone come out?

It depends on the time of year and the job. The installers we pick have agreed to call you back fast, and outside peak season most can arrange a quote visit within a few days. The first hot weeks of spring and summer are when everyone else is ringing around too, so if you’re planning a new system, enquire in winter or early spring.

Which brands can the contractors install?

Most installers work with the major brands sold in Australia, such as Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, Panasonic, LG, Samsung and Actron. If you already have a preferred brand or model, mention it in your enquiry. If not, the contractor can explain the options at different price points.

Do I need a quote visit or can I get a price over the phone?

A simple back-to-back bedroom install can often be priced from a few photos showing the inside wall, the outside wall and your switchboard. Ducted systems, multi-head systems, two-storey jobs and anything with a long pipe run usually need a site visit so the contractor can check roof space, access and electrical capacity.
