Mill-era homes, a university next door

Air conditioning a Petrie house used to be a family job; now it’s often a landlord job too. The paper mill that opened in 1957 turned Petrie from a farming town into a suburb, and since the UniSC Moreton Bay campus opened on the old mill site in 2020, many of those older homes are being upgraded for student and family renters. I’m setting up a student rental near UniSC. What aircon makes sense?

Can one outdoor unit run several rooms?

Yes. A multi-head system runs two or more indoor units from one outdoor unit, which suits townhouses and units near the town centre where wall or courtyard space is limited. The trade-off is that if the outdoor unit fails, every connected room loses cooling, so for rentals, separate splits are often the safer choice.

Is a home near the river a problem for aircon?

Not a problem, just something to plan for. Petrie’s southern edge is the North Pine River, downstream of North Pine Dam, and river levels rose sharply in 2011 and again in 2022. Check Moreton Bay’s flood mapping for your block, and ask the installer about a raised slab or wall bracket if your yard is low-lying.
