Two kinds of Banyo home
Banyo’s population jumped after WWII, from about 3,000 in 1947 to 5,400 by 1954, and many of those post-war houses still line the older streets. Newer estates such as Couture and Summerlin have since gone up on a former Army depot and an old Hills Hoist factory site. Air conditioning in Banyo therefore covers two very different jobs, and the installer you ring may only be keen on one of them.
So you wait, chase and eventually take whoever turns up, even if they’ve never retrofitted an older house or quoted ducted in a new build.
Breathe out. Tell us which kind of home you’ve got, and we’ll send one vetted installer who does that work, with a written quote upfront.
Retrofit or new build: what changes
In a post-war home, the installer is working with what’s there: roof space that may be tight, an older switchboard and walls that were never planned for pipework. Splits in the main rooms are common, and a ducted retrofit works where the roof allows.
Newer estate homes are usually easier. Modern roof spaces and switchboards tend to suit zoned ducted, and if you’re still building, the installer can plan ductwork and the outdoor unit location before the ceilings go in. Check any estate covenants about outdoor units that can be seen from the street.
Banyo also has business parks and industrial sites, and the aircon Banyo businesses need is a commercial job rather than a home split.

Where Banyo jobs usually land
Split between the older streets, the new estates and the business parks.
Splits in post-war homes
Bedroom and living-area splits, often back-to-back, where the roof space won’t take ducting.
Ducted retrofits
Older homes with workable roof space can take a zoned system. Our ducted air conditioning page walks through the options.
New-build ducted
Zoned ducted planned with your builder in a Couture, Summerlin or other estate home.
Commercial units
Offices and warehouses in the business parks, quoted by an installer who does commercial air conditioning.
Common questions
Banyo air conditioning FAQs
We’re building in a new Banyo estate. When should we sort the aircon?
As early as you can, ideally before the frame and ceilings go up. That lets the installer plan duct runs, outlet positions, the return-air grille and the outdoor unit spot, and coordinate with your builder and electrician. Adding ducted after handover is possible but usually costs more. Check your estate’s covenants on visible outdoor units too.
Can an older post-war Banyo house take ducted?
Often, but it depends on roof height, access and the switchboard. Some post-war homes have plenty of roof space; others are tight. If ducted isn’t practical, two or three splits or a multi-head system will do the job. The installer will check during the visit and explain the options and costs in writing.
Can you find someone for a Banyo business park or warehouse?
We can look. Choose commercial on the form and tell us about the space: rough size, what it’s used for and whether it has three-phase power. We’ll look for an installer who does commercial air conditioning, and they’ll quote you directly in writing. The same goes for offices, showrooms and workshops.
Should I replace the old unit in our post-war home or add to it?
If the existing unit is old, noisy or uses R22 refrigerant, replacing it while you add rooms is usually better value, since the installer is already on site. If it’s newer and working well, keep it and add what you need. Ask for both options in the written quote so you can compare.
