Hot post-war houses, slow call-backs
Much of Stafford was built as Queensland Housing Commission homes on quarter-acre blocks in the 1940s and 50s, and young families are buying into them now. They’re solid little timber houses with very little insulation, which is why air conditioning jumps up the list for Stafford owners after the first summer. Finding someone to quote it is the frustrating bit.
One installer never rings back, one wants to sell you ducted for a small cottage, and one quotes a single unit for the whole house.
Leave that part to us. One short form, and a vetted local installer who knows these post-war homes gets in touch and quotes upfront in writing.
What a Housing Commission home needs
Most of these houses suit split systems: a 2.5 to 3.5 kW unit in each bedroom you use and a larger one in the living area. With little insulation, rooms gain heat quickly, so the installer should size for that. The upside is that the big blocks usually leave plenty of room to place the outdoor unit out of the way.
Rebuilt or heavily renovated homes are a different story. With better insulation and a usable roof space, zoned ducted becomes realistic. And with around half of Stafford’s homes rented, a lot of what Stafford landlords ask for is simply an efficient replacement that won’t break down mid-lease.
If you’re down on the valley floor near Kedron Brook, which flooded in 2022, check Brisbane City Council’s flood mapping and ask about a raised condenser mount.

Common Stafford aircon jobs
What usually comes up here, and why:
- Bedroom split systems in 1940s–50s timber homes with little insulation
- A larger living-area split for lounges and kitchens opened up during renovations
- Zoned ducted air conditioning in knock-down rebuilds and fully renovated homes
- Aircon replacement in rentals, swapping tired units for efficient inverter models
- Switchboard checks before a new circuit goes into an older home
- Outdoor units placed well back on quarter-acre blocks, clear of bedroom windows
Common questions
Stafford air conditioning FAQs
Is ducted worth it in an original Stafford Housing Commission home?
Sometimes, but splits are often the better value. Original post-war homes tend to have low roof spaces and little insulation, which makes ducted harder to fit and costlier to run. If you’re renovating, adding insulation or rebuilding, ducted becomes far more practical. The installer can look at your roof space and quote whichever option genuinely suits.
What’s the simplest aircon Stafford landlords can put in for tenants?
A correctly sized inverter split in the main bedroom and living area covers most tenants’ needs and keeps running costs down. As an indicative guide, a straightforward back-to-back bedroom install is often around $1,200 to $2,800, depending on the unit and access. A yearly service between tenancies helps avoid breakdown calls mid-lease.
Our block runs down toward Kedron Brook. Where should the outdoor unit go?
Keep it off the lowest part of the yard. Kedron Brook flooded in 2022, so on low-lying properties it’s sensible to check council’s flood mapping and consider a wall bracket or raised stand. Up toward Sparkes Hill the bigger issue is usually slope, which may mean a level pad or bracket. Either way, ask for it in the written quote.
Will my old switchboard need upgrading?
Possibly. Some 1940s and 50s homes still have original wiring and ceramic fuses, with little space for a new circuit. A licensed electrician needs to check the board can safely take the aircon. If it can’t, the upgrade should be listed separately in the written quote, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.
