Getting your air conditioner working again
It always dies in the first properly hot week, when everyone else’s has too. You ring five numbers, get voicemail on three, and the other two can’t come till next week. The kids can’t sleep, the house is an oven, and you’re tempted to grab whoever answers, licensed or not. That’s how a simple drain fix turns into an expensive regas that doesn’t fix the leak.
Breathe out. We send one vetted tech who’s licensed for refrigerant and electrical faults and has agreed to call you back fast. They find the fault and quote the fix upfront.
Some faults are simple, like a blocked drain or a clogged filter. Others, like a refrigerant leak, a failed fan motor or a faulty circuit board, need a licensed technician with the right tools.
Before you call anyone, check the basics. Make sure the circuit breaker and outdoor isolator are on, the remote has fresh batteries and is set to cool, and the filters aren’t packed with dust. Note any error code or flashing light pattern on the indoor unit, because it helps the technician arrive with the right parts.
If your safety switch keeps tripping when the aircon starts, stop using it and get it checked. That points to an electrical fault, and electrical work needs a licensed electrician.
The difference
Getting a repair the usual way vs. with us

- A proper diagnosis and fix, quoted upfront
- Refrigerant and electrical licences checked
Common aircon faults
These are the problems technicians see most often on the northside.
Running but not cooling
Often low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty coil, a failed outdoor fan or a compressor issue.
Water leaking from the indoor unit
Usually a blocked drain line or tray, or the unit not being level. Can also indicate icing.
Flashing lights or error code
The unit has detected a fault. The code pattern helps narrow down sensors, boards or communication faults.
Tripping the safety switch
An electrical fault in the unit or circuit. Turn it off and have it checked by a licensed electrician.
Ice on the pipes or coil
Low airflow or low refrigerant. Switch it off to thaw and book a technician.
Loud rattling, buzzing or squealing
Loose panels, fan bearings, debris in the outdoor unit or a failing compressor.
Costs
Aircon repair costs
Repair costs depend on the fault and parts. Most technicians charge a call-out or diagnostic fee first, then quote the repair.
| Job | Indicative cost | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Minor repair (drain, sensor, capacitor) | $150–$500 | Per job, including diagnosis |
| Major repair or leak fix and regas | $300–$1,200 | Depends on leak location and refrigerant |
| Fan motor or circuit board replacement | Quoted per job | Parts cost varies by brand and model |
| Remove and dispose of old unit | $100–$350 | If replacing instead of repairing |
Indicative only, GST inclusive, based on published Brisbane pricing guides at the time of writing. These are not our prices. Ask for the diagnosis fee and repair quote in writing.
Common questions
Aircon repair FAQs
Is it worth repairing an old air conditioner?
A useful rule of thumb: if the system is over 10 to 12 years old and the repair costs more than about half the price of a new unit, replacement is usually the better value. Newer inverter units are more efficient, and older systems are more likely to have another fault soon. A good technician will give you both options.
Why is my split system leaking water inside?
The most common cause is a blocked condensate drain or tray, which in Brisbane’s humidity can fill with slime and mould. Other causes include a unit that isn’t level, a damaged drain line or a frozen coil thawing out. Turn the unit off and get it checked before water damages the wall or ceiling.
My aircon needs regassing. Is that a normal service item?
No. Air conditioners are sealed systems and don’t use up refrigerant. If gas is low, there’s a leak somewhere. A proper repair finds and fixes the leak, pressure tests the system and then recharges it. Regassing without fixing the leak is usually money down the drain.
What do aircon error codes mean?
Each brand uses its own codes, shown as numbers on the display or a pattern of flashing lights. They point to things like sensor faults, communication errors between indoor and outdoor units, or high pressure. Your owner’s manual may list them. Tell the technician the code when booking so they can bring likely parts.
Can someone come out the same day?
Sometimes, depending on demand and the tech’s schedule. The techs we pick have agreed to call you back fast, but in a heatwave everyone’s busy. When you enquire, say whether the unit is completely dead or partly working and whether anyone at home is vulnerable to heat, so the tech can prioritise.
Should I keep running my aircon if it’s making a strange noise?
It’s best not to. A new rattle, grinding or squeal can be a loose panel, a worn fan bearing or debris in the outdoor unit, but it can also be an early sign of compressor or motor failure. Running it can turn a cheap repair into an expensive one. Switch it off, check for anything obvious outside, and book a technician.
