What a multi-head system is
Multi-head is where the ring-around gets confusing. One installer says you need it, another says two separate splits would do, and a third quotes an outdoor unit that can’t take the extra room you mentioned. Meanwhile the body corporate wants to know exactly where the condenser’s going.
That’s the bit we’ve already done. We send one vetted installer who’ll look at your space, tell you straight which setup suits, and put it in writing.
A multi-split, or multi-head, system runs two or more indoor units from a single outdoor unit. Each indoor unit has its own remote and can be set to its own temperature, but they share the one condenser outside. Indoor units are usually wall-mounted heads, though some systems can mix in ceiling cassettes or small bulkhead ducted units.
The main reason people choose multi-head is space. In units, townhouses and homes on narrow northside blocks, there often isn’t room for three or four separate condensers along the side fence, or body corporate rules limit how many can go on a balcony or wall. One outdoor unit keeps things tidy and quieter for the neighbours.
Multi-head isn’t automatically the best choice, though. It usually costs more than the same number of separate split systems, every room depends on one outdoor unit, and pipe runs to each head can get long. A contractor should talk you through both options.
The difference
Sorting multi-head the usual way vs. with us
The usual way

- Guessing who holds the right licences
With Air Conditioning North Brisbane

- An outdoor unit sized for now and later
- An installer who’s agreed to call you back fast
- Licences and insurance checked before they join
Multi-head vs separate split systems
The right answer depends on your home. Here’s how they compare.
Outdoor space
Multi-head wins where there’s only room or permission for one condenser. Separate splits need a spot for each.
Up-front cost
Separate splits are usually cheaper for the same number of rooms. Multi-head units and pipework cost more.
If something fails
With separate splits, one breakdown affects one room. With multi-head, an outdoor unit fault takes out every room.
Efficiency
Separate inverter splits are often more efficient per room. Multi-head works best when several rooms run at once.
Adding rooms later
With separate splits you just add another. A multi-head outdoor unit has a fixed number of ports and capacity.
Appearance
One condenser and fewer pipe covers on the outside walls look neater, which matters for some streets and body corporates.

Common questions
Multi-head system FAQs
How many indoor units can run off one outdoor unit?
Most residential multi-split outdoor units support two to five indoor units, depending on the brand and model. The total capacity of the indoor heads has to match what the outdoor unit can supply. The installer will choose an outdoor unit sized for the combination of rooms you want to cool.
Can each room be set to a different temperature?
Yes, each indoor unit has its own remote and thermostat. The catch is that all indoor units generally need to run in the same mode. You can’t have one room heating while another is cooling on most residential multi-split systems, which is rarely a problem in Brisbane.
Is a multi-head system good for an apartment?
Often, yes. Apartments and townhouses usually have limited balcony or plant space and strict body corporate rules about condensers. One outdoor unit serving two or three bedrooms and a living area can solve that. Check your by-laws and get body corporate approval before booking the install.
Can I add another head later?
Only if the outdoor unit has a spare port and enough spare capacity. If you think you might want to cool another room later, tell the installer up front so they can choose an outdoor unit that allows for it. Otherwise, a separate split system for the extra room is usually simplest.
Are multi-head systems noisy?
Indoor heads are as quiet as normal split systems. The outdoor unit is larger than a single split condenser and can be noticeable when running hard, so placement matters. Keep it away from bedroom windows and neighbouring living areas where possible.
Can a multi-head system mix wall units and ceiling cassettes?
Many brands allow a mix of indoor unit types on the same outdoor unit, such as wall-mounted heads in bedrooms with a ceiling cassette or slim ducted unit in a living area. Compatibility depends on the specific brand and model range. The installer can confirm which combinations work with the outdoor unit they recommend.
